Eastern Exposure Spring 2009
May 24, 2009
3 Pieces
There are three things going on with the renovations project at the moment. Two are in process even as I look out my window. One is a big hope-for...research and money pending.
1. Asbestos abatement
Asbestos was used in building materials and methods many years ago. As a result, special precautions are required when repairs are done. The asbestos abatement personnel wear a lot of protective clothing and air masks. The areas where they work have to be separated by 25 feet from any other activity.

2. Eastern Wall Masonry
The external masonry work required around the entire main building continues. In past years, most work was done on the walls of the inner court. Last year work began on the outer faces--beginning with the northern exposure. This year the work continues on the eastern wall:

3. Cloister Boiler
The need to replace the heating system in the hill top Cloister building was known. However, it was not anticipated that the boiler would choose February to "give up the ghost." The residents of the building had to move out for a couple of months until spring weather took the chill off the building. Several efforts to effect repairs (a variety of plumbing "by-passes") were unsuccessful. Research is underway to find the best solution for a more environmentally sustainable system for the building.
